My Oven Baked Round Steak and Easy Crock Pot Round Steak are popular recipes with my readers. I'm frequently asked "how to cook Round Steak in an Instant Pot?" So I've been experimenting and have finally achieved perfection!
I am excited to be able to add Instant Pot Round Steak and Gravy to my menu rotation, it's simple and easy to assemble and cooks quickly, which is perfect for busy weeknight dinners.
An Instant Pot is a great piece of kitchen equipment and something I fall back on when I need a great tasting dinner, fast. Follow along as I share the step by step process of cooking round steak in the Instant Pot.
How to cook round steak to make it tender:
The thing about Round Steak is that it's a lean, tougher cut of beef, so it normally needs to cook low and slow to tenderize, allowing the flavors time to develop. This whole process can be sped up with an Instant Pot, as the beef is cooked at a high pressure which mimics a long and slow cook.
Many people seem to be intimidated with round steak, but it's such a tasty cut of beef that I encourage you to give it a try! Round Steak is also one of the less expensive cuts of meat at the supermarket, so it's very budget friendly.
How to cook Round Steak in an Instant Pot:
- Set the Instant Pot to sauté and add the olive oil.
- When the oil is hot, sauté the onions and garlic until soft.
- Turn off the Instant Pot and add the beef broth.
- Scrape the bottom of the pot to deglaze and remove stuck-on pieces of onion and garlic.
- Place the chopped up pieces of round steak in the Instant Pot.
- Whisk together the gravy mix, cream of mushroom soup and water.
- Pour the mixture over the top of the steak.
- Place the lid on the Instant Pot and seal the vent.
- Set the pot to pressure cook on high for 18 minutes.
- When the cook time is up do a natural release for 15 minutes, then finish with a quick release to remove remaining pressure.
- Remove the steak from the pot and shred or slice, then return the meat to the pot and stir it with the gravy.
Instant Pot Round Steak ingredients and flavor variations:
- ROUND STEAK: is a great budget friendly cut of beef that is ideal for slow cooking. You could also use chuck, blade, topside, silverside or brisket as these cuts of beef can all be cooked in an Instant Pot. Adjust the cooking times depending on the cut of beef.
- OLIVE OIL: is used to saute the veggie and beef at the start of the cook. You can also use rapeseed or sunflower oil.
- ONION & GARLIC: add depth of flavor to the finished gravy.
- BEEF BROTH: is added to form a great tasting gravy to serve alongside the beef.
- CANNED SOUP: I use a can of Cream of Mushroom to cook the beef as this makes a great tasting gravy base. You could also use Cream of Celery soup, use what you have in your store.
- BROWN GRAVY MIX: use any pack of gravy mix, I like to buy the McCormicks brand in bulk as it works out a lot cheaper.
Additional ingredients you may want to add:
This is a versatile dish so you can add in other flavors and ingredients to suit your own tastes. Here are some ideas of ingredients I have added in over the years:
- DRY RANCH DRESSING MIX: use any pack of dry ranch seasoning mix, I like Hidden Valley brand which I buy in larger tubs making it more cost effective.
- VEGETABLES: add in some sliced mushrooms, peppers and carrots to give a great tasting gravy.
- CHILI HEAT: add 2 whole Anaheim peppers to the pot, just for cooking. Then remove them just before serving. They will add a slight kick to the gravy!
What side dishes pair well with Round Steak?
This richly flavored Instant Pot Round Steak has loads of flavor and a great tasting gravy. I like to serve it with Mashed Potatoes and a couple of vegetable sides like my Roasted Green Beans, Fried Okra, or Loaded Cream Cheese Corn.
How to store leftover Round Steak:
Leftovers can be safely stored in a Rubbermaid storage container for 2-3 days in the refrigerator. Then when I'm ready to enjoy, I reheat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, until piping hot.
While uncooked Round Steak can be frozen, I have never tried freezing cooked round steak.
Recipe tips:
- I make this Instant Pot Round Steak recipe at least once a month. It's less expensive to purchase the Ranch Seasoning and Brown Gravy in bulk from my local Sam's Club. Individual packets cost $1 at my local Super Center and only have around 3 tablespoons in them. This is not ideal as you may want to add more/less depending on the thickness of gravy you desire. I find bulk buying the most cost effective for my budget.
